Radar contact to NNE on WSW heading. Positioned on the track for submerged attack. Identified as 5 ship convoy with small escorts ahead and astern, Fired 4 forward tubes at overlapping targets in center of convoy. Went deep to avoid escorts. Heard 4 hits and breaking up noises from one target. Evaded below the layer . Escorts never made contact.

Surfaced and reestablished radar contact. Convoy now bearing NW on NNW heading. Initiated an end-around at flank speed.

Positioned ahead of convoy on the track setting up for stern shot. Convoy began turning away at a range of 2000yds. Escorts turned also and no increase in speed. Don't believe we were detected - Convoy was returning to base course WSW. Fired two stern tubes with target at 2500 yds and opening. Both missed

Surfaced and conducted another end-around while tracking on radar

Positioned ahead of convoy and set up for bow shot. Fired 4 tubes at 1100 yards and went deep. Four hits to sink a second ship of the convoy. Cleared to the south under a layer. Again Escorts never made contact.

Surfaced and regained radar contact. Again Convoy had turned NNW. Assumed they would return to base course and initiated an end-around to the south.

292028 DEC 1943

Continued to track on radar and turn to West occurred. Submerged on the track. Fired 4 forward tube at overlapping targets. Swung around to bring stern tubes to bear and fired last 2 torpedoes. Went deep to evade. Had 4 hits, a dud and 1 missed. Third ship of the convoy was sunk. Evaded to the South.
