Patrol Narrative: (Completed all 3 objectives of special mission)
1) Started mission at 1534 Hr., 25 June, '43. Proceeded toward Lot's Wife harbor. Made 2 long nightly submerged runs to photo BB Yamato (successful)
and avoided 24/7 air patrols. Thank goodness for deep harbors. Then proceeded toward objective at Hacijyo Jima.
2) Enroute encountered task force of DDs & 2 troop transports. Remembered BismarkBay and sank both transports on 2 separate attacks. Sank Horai Maru at 700
yd, 5 torpedos fired, 4 hits, ships sunk. Fired a spread of 6 torpedos at Verde Liner transport at 2700 yd. 3 bow hits, 3 misses, transport sunk.
3) Circled Hacijyo for 2 days at radar depth avoiding air patrols and looking for enemy Tender. Sunk Chitose Seaplane Tender north of island. Tender was close
to, but not in port. Fired 4 stern torpedos, 3 hits, 1 miss, ship sunk.
4) Refitted Midway and proceeded to Marshall Is. While enroute ordered to rescue downed aviators. At rescue area 1030 hr., 22 July '43. Patrolled and
rescued aviators on 2 consecutive days, at 171_2'E Long, 14_3'N Lat on 22 July (1534 hr) and at 170_55'E. Long and 13_57'N Lat on 23 July
(about 1600 hr).
5) Found 4 Nagara Marus at Taongi Atoll protected by circling Atami Gunboat. Sank all 4 tankers while Gunboat on opposite side of Atoll.
6) At 0820 hr, 27 July, picked up patrol boats (8 hr. loop) around Rongelap Atoll. Fog heavy. No mines nor subnets at Rongerik, Taongi, or Rongelap Atolls.
7) When fog lifted, ran long night penetration into Rongelap Atoll. Found Fuso BB and sunk her with 5 torpedos (5 hits) at 4700 yd. Maneuvered for 2nd radar
contact and found Shikaku Fleet Carrier in same Atoll. Took 4 shots at 4700 yd. 4 misses at Carrier as torpedos drifted to left. Cause unknown, maybe heavy
current?? Ended mission(as screen went to Exit). Did not investigate Bikini Atoll.
