Mission Orders: December 4th 1944
SS-383 USS Pampanito is with all haste, ordered to make preparations for her forth war patrol, and on completion, is to depart USN submarine base Darwin, and proceed to the Philippines area, and commence patrolling all sectors.

Dec 25th 1944 departed Darwin on route to the Philippine Sea.

Dec 29th 1944 Pos: 21 54N 124 48E
Mostly cloudy with heavy seas full moon

0249hrs: Arrived Philippine Sea, 204nm NE of Appari
Sector P-9, commenced patrol C=254t S=Std intend picking up N/S route from Formosa, ETA 0642hrs.

0706hrs: Turned South C=180t S=Std.

1223hrs: Visual contact, sampans dived levelled off at 200ft, stayed there for rest of the day, will surface after dark.

1400hrs: Popped up for a closer look at our sampans, B=294r R=5000 C=070t S=03kts, all look to be large sampans all moving away.

1829hrs: At PSD no HE or visual contacts, no SJ or SD contacts, surfaced, C=180t S=Std, entering sector P-8.

2338hrs: SJ contact B=359 R=16.5nm C=006t est. S=15kts est.

December 30th Position 1951N 12424E
Partly cloudy with moderate seas full moon

0035hrs: Visual on contacts 3 maru no escorts, B=352r R=4nm C=006t S=9kts.

0050hrs: Engaged small-unescorted convoy sinking 3 with 4 MK-14s and a deck gun action.
Target 1 SF B=004r R=1000 C=000 S=8kts fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT torpedo struck and sank target.
Target 2 SF B=020r R=950 C=000t S=8kts fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT torpedo struck and damaged target, fired second MK-14 torpedo struck and sank target.
Target 3 SS B=020r R=4000 C=252t S=10kts, Battle surfaced commenced deck gun action, disarming and disabling him, moved in behind him, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT torpedo struck and sank target.

2020hrs: Have taken up station 128nm SE of Appari, sector P-7, and have an SJ contact, possible Medium convoy, B=171r R=16.5nm C=186t est. S=11kts est. early indications 2 escorts.

2303hrs: Visual on contacts, medium convoy 10 maru 2 escorts, B=300r R=3500 C=185 S=5.8kts.

2320hrs: Attacked lightly escorted convoy, sinking 3 with 3 MK-14s,
1st target OT B=330r R=2700 C=185t S=5.8kts, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT, torpedo struck and sank target.
2nd target OT B=338r R=1300 C=180 S=5.3kts, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT, torpedo struck and sank target.
3rd target OT B=001r R=1200 C=180t S=5.3kts, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT, torpedo struck and sank target, dived found thermal layer at 300ft levelled off at 450ft rigged for depth charge, turned to 180t S=1/3.





December 31st Position 1717N 12423E
Partly cloudy with calm seas full moon

0002hrs: Hi speed contacts fading aft, Low speed contacts off to port, second chance at convoy, at PSD have visual on forth OT B=001r R=5180 C=133t S=5.8, fired 1 MK-14 set 31kts 10deg offset, contact MOT, torpedo struck and sank target, I must admit I did not expect to hit it, let alone sink it, spotted escort closing, dived.

0131hrs: Have slipped away from our pursuers, vacating area, will head NW, and take up station North of Appari.

1233hrs: SJ contacts, B=306r R=11.5nm, will work our way round them,

1739hrs: on station 55nm North of Appari, sector P-1.

January 1st Position: 1927N 12129E
Mostly cloudy with moderate seas full moon

0655hrs: Back on surface, have two SJ contacts, 1st contact B=094r R=13000 moving away, believed to be the escort, 2nd contact B=171r R=10nm possible CFS from convoy, altered course to investigate.

0759hrs: Visual on contact, confirmed as the CFS, closing with target intend conducting deck gun action.

0830hrs: sunk CFS continuing with patrol, leaving the area, heading NW of Appari.

1700hrs: on station NW of Appari.

January 2nd Position: 1915N 11959E
Mostly cloudy with moderate seas Gibbous moon

0900hrs: SJ contact B=000 R=16.5nm C=185 S=11kts?

1058hrs: visual on contact, 7 maru 2 escorts.

1145hrs: commenced attack,
1st target TT B=005r R=1600 C=185 S=5.8kts, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT, torpedo struck and sank target
2nd target SF B=010r R=1000 C=184 S=5.7kts, fired 1 MK-14 set contact MOT, torpedo missed target
3rd target AMC B=020r R=950 C=185 S=5.8kts, fired 3 MK-14s set contact MOT, torpedoes struck and sank target
4th target CFS B=191r R=650 C=220 S=5.6kts, fired 3 MK-14s set contact MOT, torpedoes struck and sank target, dived passed thermal layer at 350ft levelled off at 500ft rigged for depth charge, vacating area, returning home.
